God's Law of Divorce and Remarriage
The most important and romantic law in the Bible, and probably the most over-looked commands.
~ How can this law or command by God be so beautiful?
Divorce was first talked about when the Israelites left Egypt and God began to teach them how to be His people.
(Deuteronomy 24:1-4) If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2 and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3 and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, 4 then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.
~ So, just to explain this, let's say you just got married, then you divorced you wife, she marries another guy, she cannot come back to you even if the other guy divorces her. Jesus even wrote that unless your wife is cheating on you, you shouldn't divorce her. Because if you do then whoever she marries will then also be in adultery, even if he was never with another woman before.
(Matthew 5:31) “Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason EXCEPT SEXUAL IMMORALITY causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
~ This is very easy to understand so far. And if you are at this point and wonder, 'how in the world is that beautiful?' Well here we go. Bear with me, the Old Testament is quite brutal with punishment.
(Leviticus 20:10) The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death.
(Deuteronomy 22:22) If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.
~ So it's pretty easy to understand if you get caught in adultery the punishment of the law is death. So is there a catch? yes. If you catch your wife in adultery and you divorce her, she is no longer in adultery. If you truly love your wife you would do this to save her life. But she could never come back to you. But how is this beautiful?
(Exodus 6:7) I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am Yahweh your God, who delivered you from the forced labor of the Egyptians" And He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land… the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, in the land of which He swore to your fathers to give you. You shall be blessed above all peoples" (Deut. 7:13-14).
"And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?" (Deut. 10:12-13)
~ WHAT IS HAPPENING??? Did God literally marry Israel? Sounds strange that God can marry so many. Or that he chooses a whole nation to be His bride.
~ Does the Bible talk more about Israel or God's people being a bride or woman that he loves? Of course he does... (I'm making this super easy so when you go to church and hear their doctrines on this you can just chuckle to yourself on your bench and scoff) no I'm not against pastors. I'm against ignorance. Here's where it gets complicated...
(Jeremiah 3:1) “If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers—would you now return to me?” declares the Lord. 2 “Look up to the barren heights and see. Is there any place where you have not been ravished? By the roadside, you sat waiting for lovers, sat like a nomad in the desert. You have defiled the land with your prostitution and wickedness. 3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen. Yet you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame.
(Jeremiah3:8) I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.
~ God divorced Israel???
Wait, so Israel was committing idolatry, or adultery towards God so he divorced her... But why? Oh yeah, because then if he didn't he would be bound by his own law to wipe out all of Israel if he stayed with her (them)
~ Here's the problem, how does Israel go back to God? They can't... Or can they. WHY DID JESUS EVEN DIE???
(Romans 7) ...Or do you not know brethren that I am speaking to those that know the Law (what law?... The Law of divorce??) That the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives. 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
~ So now that I have explained all this keep reading Romans 7, you will finally learn the truth why Jesus died. But just because I hate when people do this to me I'll just tell you. In a big summary.
God married Israel, out of love, and taught them how to be a pure and spotless bride. But Israel betrays God and goes after idols and fake gods. God is overwhelmed with grief and is forced to divorce Israel to save her life so she won't receive the punishment of the law which was death. But God wants his people back, he loves them...
~ But how?
God comes down as Jesus and lays down his life to break the bonds of the first marriage. Then he rises from the dead to make himself an eligible bachelor for his bride. And like any good fiancée he goes to prepare a place for his bride.
~ But why did he do all this? For the same reason over and over again. To protect his people from death, he even died for us so we can choose Him. I don't know of any other religion or diety out there that would do this for his people.
And that my friends is why I think The Law of Divorce is absolutely the most beautiful law in the world.
*** Side note... Bible talks about other Gods' being dead, that's why we don't have to divorce the other Gods to go back to God/Jesus.
